There are many beliefs surrounding menstruation. Some sound bizarre and insane, and yet many countries are practising these beliefs. These beliefs have been passed down from generation to generation, and we aren’t sure if we should follow them.

In this article, we debunk three beliefs surrounding the menstrual period and the scientific truth that discredits them.

 

“You lose a lot of blood during your period.”

 

Usually, menstrual bleeding only lasts about 4 to 5 days. Some people have lighter or heavier periods.

 

It may seem like women are losing a lot of blood during these few days, but it isn’t! The amount of blood loss ranges from 30 to 60 mL, or about 2 to 4 tablespoons.

 

If you find yourself needing to change your pad or tampon every 1 to 2 hours or having periods that last more than 7 days, then you may have heavier periods than normal. Consult your healthcare provider because it may be a symptom of other health conditions.

“Our periods sync when we’re together often!”

 

In 1971, Martha McClintock found that within a year, those who lived in the same dorm were 33% closer to the start of the semester.

 

There are some reports that animals such as mice, chimpanzees, hamsters, and some monkeys living together also have synchronous periods.

 

This phenomenon is likely to be that women belonging to the same group are influenced by pheromones in each other’s sweat, making their menstrual cycles closer.

 

However, it is not definite. Sometimes periods don’t sync. What about yours?

“You shouldn’t drink cold during menstruation!”

 

Based on Chinese traditions, they believe keeping your body in a warm state helps the blood flow smoothly.

When you drink cold beverages, it’ll disrupt the body’s temperature and slow down blood circulation. This will lead to blood clots in the uterus and worsening period pain. They believe the blood clots may also lead to tumour growth.

 

However, the scientific community has yet to prove or disprove this statement.
