Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
- Muscle stiffness and tremor: This is the most widely known symptom. The symptoms of tremor usually start from one side of the body, hands, arms, feet, legs and chin. This can disrupt the patient’s movement, and even unable to move from several seconds to several minutes.
- Memory decline, confusion or dementia: More than 50% of patients have mild mental decline, and about 20% of patients have cognitive impairment. Patients may also experience speech disorders, such as weak, slow, or uncoordinated speech. This is because more than half of the dopamine nerve cells in the brain have lost.
- Degradation of smell: This is the least known symptom. The olfactory glomeruli, olfactory tracts, and olfactory nerves that manage the sense of smell in the nervous system begin to degenerate.
- Sleep disorders: During the rapid eye movement period, the patient’s muscle tend to continue to contract, some of them may tend to have abnormal behaviours such as yelling, jumping, and even beating during dreaming.
