What is Andropause (Male Menopause)?
Hormonal change is a normal process of ageing. Females go through menopause around the age of 51 years old, which is associated with hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and the cessation of the menstrual period. But do men go through the same hormonal changes as women?
What is andropause?
Andropause, also known as “male menopause”, is a term used to describe the decline of testosterone levels in men when they reach middle age.
With the decline of testosterone levels, men go through various symptoms, such as reduced sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, reduced muscle mass, increased body fat, and depressed mood. These symptoms can be overwhelming and can affect their sense of well-being.
Do men go through andropause the same way women’s menopause?
The way testosterone levels decline in men does not plummet the same way in women. Men’s testosterone levels gradually decrease, declining at 2% a year starting around 30 to 40 years old.
The symptoms that men go through can appear to be more subtle and less severe than the menopausal symptoms women go through.
Women’s menopause marks the end of the reproductive cycle. However, some men do not lose the ability to reproduce completely.
Doctors do not diagnose andropause.
Unlike menopause, doctors do not diagnose andropause as a health condition, but they diagnose it as testosterone deficiency. If you think you might have low testosterone, talk to your healthcare provider about your signs and symptoms, and treatment options.
What can men do to boost their sense of well-being?
There are some lifestyle changes men can make to boost their well-being:
- Take more fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, and nuts.
- Be more physically active.
- Get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
- Manage your stress levels.
- Reduce your use of tobacco and alcohol.
- Take herbal remedies.
